I needed some time to reflect on the busy and often frustrating month of June before releasing the months newsletter.
News broke of Tokyo’s alarming decision to withdraw from the International Whaling Commission after 30 years in early June, and the first whaling boats set sail with their harpoons covered by plastic sheets on July 1st. As a life-long animal lover and passionate conservationist I was heart-broken at the news and have carried out a great deal of research in order to try and comprehend the decision. .
It is expected that Japanese boats will kill 227 whales between now and the years end with the meat being sold on local markets across the country. Yoshifumi Kai, head of the Japan Small-Type Whaling Association said of the decision “It was worth waiting for 31 years. Today is the best day.” .
Another alarming story was the release of figures from Brazil’s space agency stating that the monthly deforestation is up 88.4% compared with a year ago. .
Legally, President Jair Bolsonaro’s government is under pressure to protect the Amazon under trade deal terms, but the fiery president is a strong supporter of development in the Amazon and his influence has undoubtedly fuelled the spike in deforestation. His administration will effect the lives of people across the world long after it has left office. .
