"Hong Kong/China Reunification Anniversary Model"
Before 1840, Hong Kong was a small farming and fishing com- munity in the southern coast of China. However, Hong Kong's geo- graphical potential of becoming a profitable commercial port at- tracted the British during the Late Qing period. After the Opium War, the British forced the Qing Government to sign the Treaty of Nanjing in 1842 to concede Hong Kong Island. In 1860, the two governments signed the Convention of Beijing, as a result, Kowloon Peninsula and Stonecutters Island were conceded to the British as well. Later, the British leased the land north of Boundary Street up to Shenzhen river (that is, the "New Territo ries") for 99 years.
The remarkable character of Hong Kòng people, such as their hardworking attitude, aggressiveness, flexibility and high efficiency enabled Hong Kong to survive numerous economical, social and political crisis during the years of British colonial rule, and to de- velop into an international trade and financial centre, and also, a cosmopolitan city where east meets west.
After 150 years of colonial rule, the reunification of Hong Kong with China finally came in 1997. Under the principles of "One Country, Two Systems" and 'a high degree of autonomy of the Hong Kong Special Administrative region, the shining "Pearl of the orient" will continue to enjoy prosperity and stability in many years to come.
