Here me out on this! Trading Alshon Jeffery to get Jadeveon Clooney would be a very smart move. I haven’t yet thoroughly thought out every scenario of a possible Jeffery for Clowney swap, so I don’t have a final and conclusive opinion on the matter, but in my opinion fans are writing off the possibility of this trade way too quickly. Here is why this would probably end up being a solid move that is in our best interest:
1. I think Alshon Jeffery most likely has two years left on this team. He is going into the second year of his four year $52 million dollar contract extension and after the 2020 season, all of the $26 million in guarantees on his contract will be paid. Alshon will then be due a cap hit of over $15 million going into the 2021 season when he will be 31. I don’t expect to see him on this team at that point.
2. The Eagles already have Alshon’s replacement on the team. I’m not even as high on J.J. Arcega-Whiteside as a lot of people are, however it is clear that he is Jeffery’s predecessor. What makes Alshon Jeffery so dangerous is his knowledge of the game. I understand that may sound stupid, but when you look at the physical skills, he isn’t all that rare of an athlete. We always talk about his size, but in reality he isn’t well above average when it comes to the average height of Wide Receivers across the league. That along with the fact that he definitely isn’t the fastest just proves that he simply knows the game and understands this offense. He gets open, knows how to block, and is simply a great, dependable target for any Quarterback. I’m not taking away from Alshon’s skill, but what I am saying is that his brain is what separates him from most receivers in this league. If J.J. Arcega-Whiteside puts time into learning Doug Pederson’s offense and opposing defenses, there is no doubt in my mind that he can have the same or a similar impact on this offense that Alshon Jeffery currently has.
