My favorite owl portraits are the ones with "eye contact". "Eye contact portraits" are moving, intriguing and sometimes even intimidating. Maybe because owls have their eyes at the front of their heads, portraits get so much "personality". Humans also have the eyes at the front. This makes "humanizing" (anthropomorphism) owls easier.
I hope this is also the case with my portrait of this Northern Long-eared Owl (Asio otus). I hope it helps to contribute to more people liking owls. Popular animals are more likely to be protected.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ The Northern Long-eared Owl nests in trees using old nests of crows or magpies. After at least three weeks young leave the nest to climb in neighboring trees. After five weeks they are ready to fly away. I was there in time to photograph.
In the Netherlands this owl is on the "red list" and listed as 'vulnerable". Since the seventies the population is in decline, and from the nineties with more than 5% per year. This is specifically in areas with intensive agriculture.
Northern Long-eared Owls need suitable habitat in order to survive. That means we should pursue a natural looking countryside with open grasslands, hedges and wooden banks.
If there aren't enough suitable natural places to nest, we could help them by placing artificial nesting places like a nesting box.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
