pro-crast-i-plan-ning: n. delaying an action by overplanning or unrealistically setting expectations for yourself (but you feel real good about yourself, because you are planning big things, after all... how could this be bad?!) 🤷♀️ Anyone else out there a current or recovering (right here!) PROCRASTI-PLANNER?? If you are in the thick of it you may not even realize it is something you are doing!
Feel compelled to make elaborate and detailed schedules 🗓 when you have any task you are working towards completing (i.e. MCAT, med school exam, applying for residency, etc.)?? Hello Type A’s!
Yep, same friend. Same. 🙋♀️ It is so tempting to overplan📝. You feel like you are being productive and setting yourself up for success. Planning seems like it should be one of those things you can never have too much of!❌ Not true. You absolutely can OVER PLAN. It is easier to do than you may think. Over planning decreases productivity, sets unrealistic expectations and undue pressure on yourself.
Planning is great but keep these 3 things in mind:
1. Limit your time for planning. Put on a timer if you have to and when time is up shift to working on your first task.
2. Create a plan that is realistic. Know yourself. We tend to underestimate the time it takes to complete tasks. If this is you, take what you want to accomplish in a certain time frame and try to cut it in half! Likely this will be a much more realistic schedule.
3. Do not re-plan. If you do number 2 well you won’t have to worry about this one. But if you get off of your schedule, resist the urge to completely start over from scratch and waste a whole bunch more time creating an entirely new schedule. It is so tempting, but your time is better spent getting down to work and back on track!
Anyone else have tips on how to avoid the productivity-killing procrasti-planning?? ______________________________________
