Las vías glutamatérgicas están fuertemente implicada en la plasticidad neuronal, en la memoria y el aprendizaje y otras complejas funciones. El rol del GABA es inhibir o reducir la actividad neuronal, y juega un papel importante en el comportamiento, la cognición y la respuesta del cuerpo frente al estrés. Las investigaciones sugieren que el GABA ayuda a controlar el miedo y la ansiedad cuando las neuronas se sobreexcitan.  Por otro lado, los niveles bajos de este neurotransmisor se asocian a trastornos de ansiedad, problemas para dormir, la ansiedad y la esquizofrenia. Nicotine and the brain 🧠. ▫️⠀ Happy Tuesday everyone!! I hope you had a wonderful weekend and are amped for a new week! Last week I did a post about where nicotine came from, and surprised you all with it’s pesticidal properties🐜. Today I would like to touch on a few of the pathways involved when nicotine enters the human body. ▫️⠀ Upon inhalation (or chewing), nicotine quickly enters the blood stream and travels to the central nervous system (CNS)🧠. This happens really QUICK, within 10 seconds of initial consumption😱. ▫️⠀ In the brain, nicotine acts on nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChR). These receptors are ion channels, allowing the flow of ions through them to transduce a signal (you can think of these as messages) when a stimulus is present🤞🏼. These channels are normally activated by endogenous acetylcholine and are involved in many cognitive functions like memory, arousal, motor control and reward. ▫️⠀ Stimulation of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors also results in the release of a variety of neurotransmitters in the brain, most importantly dopamine☝🏼. Dopamine is involved in reward pathways and is what provides the pleasurable experience when one smokes a cigarette 🚬. Dopamine is the critical culprit responsible for all drug-induced reward and pleasure people feel. ▫️⠀ Dopamine is also released when people carry out satisfying tasks , like checking off items on a list! When a baby is born, the brain & nervous system are not fully developed. In fact, only the brain stem - the part responsible for automated actions like eating and breathing - is well developed. Over the next two to three years, the rest of the brain grows and develops at a rapid rate.⠀ ⠀ The primary influencer of healthy brain development is the caregiver. It is the caregiver’s job to provide emotional and psychological interactions that aid healthy development of social and emotional functioning. If these interactions do not take place, the brain does not develop as it should.⠀ ⠀ Of course, this has implications for relationships over the child’s lifespan.⠀ ⠀ 〰️⠀ ⠀ As partner to a survivor, I know the impact my partner’s early life experiences had on his developing brain. He knows it too. What he did not receive from his primary caregiver directly impacts our relationship. It can feel confusing, hopeless, and frustrating FOR BOTH OF US.⠀ ⠀ You see, the interactions he received (or did not receive) directly impacts our relationship. ⠀ ⠀ I believe it is important for partners and survivors to understand basic information on early development. What we did or did not receive from our primary caregivers directly impacts our relationships today.⠀ ⠀ If you are someone who did not receive what your brain needed from your primary caregivers, I want to acknowledge your challenges. If you are in a relationship with someone who did not receive what they needed, I acknowledge your struggles too.
