Castlevania is an adaptation of the old Castlevania videogame series. It revolves around Trevor Belmond, a somewhat retired vampire hunter that has to stop Dracula from eliminating the entire population of the Walachia with his army of undead. On his adventure he gets joined by the mage Sypha and Alucard, who is Draculas son.
Ok, look: I know that it was produced in america by an all american team lead by an american director, but it’s an anime for me. And one, who’s animation puts most japanese animes to shame. Whilst some of the dialogue scenes were animated a bit akwardly, the action scenes are incredibly well coregraped and animated and the anime has little to no CGI. Besides that, as much as i hate to admit it, I love gore. And Castlevania is gory as hell. Not just gory in the sense of bloody, but rather gory in the sense of torn apart bodies and intestines flying all over the screen. Besides the visuals, another very enjoyable part about this show were it’s characters. All three main characters were likable and their different personalities made for a great dynamic within the group. Season two added more characters to the enemy line and their different backgrounds and ideals and their constant striving for power was interesting to watch. But above all that, I especially enjoyed the villain, Dracula. From episode one I felt with him and sometimes I even found myself rooting for him instead of the good guys. Dracula is just a sad old man, who lost the only person that was ever precious to him to some religios fanatics and therefore developed a hate on mankind as a whole. For the most part I felt incredibly sorry for him (and his son too) and thats why, as shallow as this anime actually is, it still managed to make me somewhat emotional. Overall Castlevania is just a fun watch, it’s fast paced, funny, gory and only has 12 episodes, and thats why I’ve watched it at least 4 times by now.
(Considering that this is on here I should propably also have added Avatar to this list)
Overall verdict: 8.25/10
