Just rewatched Coco with the husb and the little one. She was so cute dancing along to songs and screaming at the TV whenever Dante the dog appeared. Naturally husb and I cried at everything as usual.
I really love this movie because the cultural celebrations and beliefs behind the dia de los muertos feel so right to me personally.
As a biracial multi-ethnic woman, both sides of my family have a lot of coming together, memory sharing, and celebration for our loved ones after they die but this is usually concentrated around the time of funeral and after services.
My soul yearns to talk about those I love who are dead whenever they come up, and to feel more comfortable with my range of emotions that stem from that expression, but I always feel emotionally trapped by myself. I think this is what has always drawn me towards the day of the dead this idea of celebrating our departed loved ones in a large event with lots of color and happiness with grief, being completely aware of death but also celebrating life, of ourselves and our ancestors.
