Russia, Hong Kong, Venuzuela, Egypt, Chile, Iran, Italy, and the Netherlands are all the largest consumers of Brazilian exported beef. In case of the off chance that someone from one of these countries sees this, please, stop or dramatically lower your consumption of beef. Rainforest ecosystems are NOT MADE TO BURN, other ecosystems like the Australian bush are built around fires, they replenish the soil and give new life, but this does not apply to the amazon, fires are not part of the natural cycle. With 65-70% of deforestation being due to cattle, you as the consumer CAN make a difference. If you can dramatically lower or cease your consumption of beef then we can make a significant difference. Chickens use 20% of the land needed by cattle, and produce just 10% of the greenhouse gas emissions. It is the Brazilian government who is encouraging farmers to burn jungle for agricultural purposes, much of that being either pasture for the cattle to graze, or crops to feed the cattle. On earth today, there are around 1 billion cows. Each of those cows produces 70-120kg of methane a year, so let's just average that out as 95kg each. That gives us about 95,000,000 metric tons of methane a year. One particle of methane gas has the same greenhouse effect as 23 particles of carbon dioxide. Times that by the amount of methane produced a year and you get the equivalent of dumping 2,185,000,000 metric tons of co2 right into the atmosphere. Do the right thing, lead by example.
Even if you don't live in any of these countries, you should do the same and cut down on your beef.
