What are the boundaries to your humanity?
Most of us can identify times in our lives where we have treated others with compassion, or when we have been empathetic or considerate, or forgiving. But we can also identify times when we have not been those things. Why? It is likely that we have weaknesses in the other character dimensions that contribute to our lack of humanity, such as lacking accountability, justice, humility, or temperance.
Perhaps you lack humanity when you are in your car – could strengthening your temperance enhance your humanity? Or perhaps you lack humanity with people who are older or younger than you – could strengthening your accountability, justice, or transcendence enhance your humanity? Or perhaps you lack humanity with those who have different views than you do – could strengthening your justice, or transcendence enhance your humanity? Or perhaps you lack humanity to those who have hurt your loved ones – could strengthening your transcendence or collaboration enhance your humanity?
Challenge 22: Reflect on times when you have lacked humanity and ask yourself why. This week try to see what you can do to enhance your humanity in these situations.
