Had the opportunity to try out Oceans, an evolution game.
I’ve got to say, I’ve always just been fine with Evolution, could take it or leave it. Oceans however was a great game.
It felt similar to evolution in a few ways, but mostly just how you added traits to your species.
Trait cards now have attack and protection values. So when you’re feeding species, it feels a bit more like a battle game in the sense that you weigh attack and defence and that’s how much you can feed on as a predator.
The way you feed is very structured. You can only feed one species, either by predation or foraging, but you must age all species. What this means is that you have to balance how many species you have, how much you can feed and how many rounds they stay fed as you’ll have to endure each species has a stock of food or it’ll die off. The other thing to keep in mind is over population. If you feed your species too well, they become over populated and lose half their food supply.
The complexity level is a fair bump up from Evolution but in a good way. I could see myself playing this a significant amount as its crunchier and more of a puzzle to work out than Evolution.
Even as a prototype, the artwork was stunning and vibrant. I can’t wait to see a final copy of this game.
Who backed this? Are you excited to give it a try?
