MY FREAKING HERO - what a true example of what a human being should exemplify at the core. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Imagine that you, right now, are stripped of your privileges, and your living situation has become dangerous and/or life-threatening because your government has fallen or your country has been seized by war and corruption and you are forced to do whatever it takes to protect your loved ones and keep them safe. What would you do? Would you take the chance in crossing a border to a place that’s deemed safer for you and your family? A place that can provide a safe haven and a better FUTURE for them? Would you do whatever it takes, even if it means risking your own life or well being? Before you run for your lives, are you going to stop and make sure you bring pertinent documents with you to apply for refugee status/asylum? Would you stay back and wait for your refugee status to be approved before you run? What if there is no time? Would you want someone to show you compassion? Be merciful? Would you want someone to help you? Do we even think about these things before making rash and harsh opinions about it being the migrant parents’ faults that they and their children are being forced into terrible living conditions for crossing the border illegally? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ No. Because it’s not happening to us personally. Because we are PRIVILEGED. Because that idea is unfathomable to us. But that’s the beautiful thing about empathy - you don’t need to be in a similar situation to have or show compassion. It should be inherent. That’s what it means to be a good human being. Regardless of your faith, the core of religion, in general, teaches you to show compassion, to forgive, and to love and treat your neighbor with kindness. Even if you aren’t religious (which is also okay), the same should apply if you are human. But, unfortunately, this concept seems to be lost (or conveniently forgotten) on many these days.
