John Carpenter’s The Thing released 37 years ago on this day, June 25, 1982.
1. The Thing didn’t do well at the box office, which could be because the nice alien movie ET opened shortly before this movie opened.
2. Instead of building an entirely new set for the Norwegian base camp scenes that appear early on in the film, Carpenter simply filmed those scenes in the charred remnants of Outpost 31, after it was blown up for the movie’s climactic finale.
3. Rob Bottin was already an established name in the world of special effects when he was hired to work on The Thing, which is remarkable when you consider he was just 22 at the time. First hired by special effects legend Rick Baker at the age of 14, Bottin’s early credits included films like King Kong, Piranha, The Howling and even Star Wars.
