League News: Raiders DB Lamarcus Joyner is expected to play both free safety and slot cornerback in DC Paul Guenther’s scheme.
Joyner (5-8, 191lbs) started his NFL career as a slot cornerback but switched primarily to free safety the last two seasons with the Rams.
The Raiders value Joyner’s versatility, so he’ll likely play free safety in the base defense while moving to the slot in sub packages.
Raiders HC Jon Gruden offered high praise for Joyner and compared him to former Buccaneers All-Pro DB Ronde Barber: “I have so much respect for him,” Gruden said of Joyner. “I’m so excited to coach him I can’t even tell you. . . . When I was in Tampa, I coached a guy named Ronde Barber. He may have been, perhaps, my favorite player I ever coached. He wasn’t the biggest guy and he wasn’t the fastest guy, but when he put the helmet on, something happened to him. Joyner is the closest thing I’ve ever seen to Ronde as a slot corner. I think he’s the best. I think he has a chance to be dynamic in there,” Gruden said.
Joyner, 28, started 15 games for the Rams last season and recorded a career-high 78 total tackles, one interception, three pass breakups, one sack, and a fumble recovery.
In three playoff starts, Joyner recorded 10 total tackles.
The Raiders signed Joyner to a 4-year/$42M contract worth $21.3M guaranteed on March 14th.
