I snuck this one in a few weeks back, late night, as I padded through quiet, cobbled backstreets, and @totoicecream emerged as a beacon in the fog of a very trying day.
I am meant to be walking to collect the van to bring back to the venue so we can load the gear into it and drive it back to parking then walk to the hotel and get to bed, but instead I’m standing inside Töto, listening to the proprietor tell me he opened his ice cream shop in November 2015.
His Argentinian parents had a cafe back home in the 1970s, he explains, and he uses their recipes, while adhering to a hand-made, all-natural ingredients ethos.
I have Banana.
It doesn’t have a strong punch, flavour-wise, but what it does have is enormous body.
It’s exceptionally, deliciously chewy, like a pudding. Staggeringly so. Even the smallest morsel fills the mouth with overwhelming presence, surrounded by what I can only describe as an atmosphere, a tangible, near-physical aura. It’s really quite astonishing.
It’s almost midnight and I’ve been working for 18 hours, so maybe I should have had something lighter, a sorbet, perhaps. I’m not complaining, but for better or worse I’ll still be digesting this at breakfast!
