Take care of your patients. Take care of yourself whilst doing it. . . Over the last 3 weeks I have been working in the emergency department. Our shifts are 10 hours long. It seems like every minute that a new patient with a new medical problem walks through the door. It is honestly ENDLESS! 24 hours. 7 days a week. The ED never closes. . . It’s so easy to get caught up in it all. There is an endless list of tests to do, boo-boos to look at, notes to write - with a constant flow of patients 365 days a year - it literally is endless. . . With no natural lighting and so many patients, the day literally passes in a snap. Before you know it, you haven’t eaten all day, have had no fluids yourself (but have certainly charted them for everyone else!) and haven’t even had a toilet break in the last 10 hours. It’s so easy to forget yourself - I know that I often do. . . To remind ourselves that we are indeed only human and need to take care of ourselves too, a group of Australian healthcare students, professionals and I #HealthCareDownUnder  have created the #shareselfcare  campaign to raise awareness that we need to take care of ourselves just as well as we take care of our patients. . . This week I’m going to make a real effort to make sure that I’m drinking, eating, toileting (!) and taken mindful meditation breaks to make sure that I take care of myself on this busy rotation, so I can be my best and do my best. . . | HEALING MOON MEDITATION | Years ago, I introduced a powerful meditation called the Healing Moon Meditation to people who were struggling and in need. It is our birthright to know the healing power of this meditation and use it whenever we’d like. It’s a miraculous meditation we have been given to help us heal and even to grow in compassion for ourselves and others. _ There are many forms of meditation taught online and in classes. They each have their merits and can be helpful. However, if you’re someone who struggles to meditate because it’s hard to sit still, you don’t have time, or you’re in too much pain or too stressed to clear the thoughts from your mind, those meditations may be challenging or not work for you. _ There are many meditations I have shared that can help you access miraculous healing benefits in just a few minutes, making them realistic for almost anyone. They also provide a way for you to deeply connect with the beautiful earth we live on and its perfect design to support us through our trials and hardships. I call these meditations the Soul-Healing Meditations and I describe some of the best of them in my first book Medical Medium. The minute we were born and took our first breath, we were given the right to use these Soul-Healing Meditations for healing and sustenance. _ One meditation that I haven’t yet shared in my books is the Healing Moon Meditation. This wonderful meditation cleanses the mind of poisonous thoughts racing through a busy mind and clears toxic emotions stored in the heart. To start the meditation, you must reconnect with the moon. Each night, or as many nights a week as you can, gaze at the moon for five minutes. If you’re not able to do it for that long, even doing it for 30 seconds will be helpful. You can first orient yourself to the wonder that is the moon and spend a moment appreciating it. It’s helpful to generally be aware of the moon as much as possible. Know where it is and how it’s magnetic force can help you heal and hold more light. . Loneliness is the awareness of complete isolation and are not our activities self-enclosing? . . Though our thoughts and emotions are expansive, are they not exclusive and dividing? Are we not seeking dominance in our relationships, in our rights and possessions, thereby creating resistance? Do we not regard work as "yours" and "mine"? Are we not identified with the collective, with the country, or with the few? Is not our whole tendency to isolate ourselves, to divide and separate? . . The very activity of the self, at whatever level, is the way of isolation and loneliness is the consciousness of the self without activity. . . Activity, whether physical or psychological, becomes a means of self-expansion and when there is no activity of any kind, there is an awareness of the emptiness of the self. It is this emptiness that we seek to fill, and in filling it we spend our life, whether at a noble or ignoble level. . . There may seem to be no sociological harm in filling this emptiness at a noble level but illusion breeds untold misery and destruction, which may not be immediate. . . The craving to fill this emptiness - to run away from it, which is the same thing - cannot be sublimated or suppressed for who is the entity that is to suppress or sublimate? Is not that very entity another form of craving? The objects of craving may vary, but is not all craving similar? You may change the object of your craving from drink to ideation but without understanding the process of craving, illusion is inevitable. (Continued in comments)

A gorgeous friend gave this lovely card to me a couple of years back. I can't get rid of it, it lives in my bedside drawer of special things that I don't quite know what to do with. Moo raids it on a daily basis, she seems to be in wonderment of all the random bits and bobs. I don't mind...it means I get relive memories and smile as I put them all, including this card, back in the drawer each day. Back to the card...the message, so simple...made me catch my breath. EMOTIONAL TRAUMA • If we know each other outside this social media space, you likely know I very suddenly and unexpectedly lost my uncle last weekend. • Since then, I’ve been struggling to process my emotions. I’m good at staying positive, at focusing on all the things I have to be grateful for (and there is a lot of that), and on looking at things logically - i.e. if there’s nothing I can do to control it, then I need to let it go (which can sometimes come off like I don’t care). I keep thinking I’ve reached a point of closure/acceptance and get frustrated with myself for “sulking”. • But with trauma like this, I think the only way out is through. You can’t stuff it down, you can’t overload your schedule to avoid processing it and hope it takes care of itself (I’ve tried). I’m forcing myself to be comfortable sitting with the sadness, letting the waves of grief come and go as they will without letting it consume me or affect my daily life + desire to lift other people up. • I’ve had multiple times where my instinct is to retreat into self-isolation and self-sabotaging behaviors. But through this I’ve realized that though I live alone + states away from any family, I also have an amazing support system both near and far. • • We need to give ourselves grace in our hardest seasons. Giving into sadness is not weakness but strength. ✨

Are you able to be present with your food? 🍏 I had the pleasure of eating many of my meals inside various food courts over the past few years while working casually in retail and hospitality. Even though I’m not a big fan of the atmosphere and the food, I don’t mind sitting there every now and then because I find them fascinating. 🍏 Ever since those jobs and spending time in a shopping center food hall, I notice how many people around me eat seemingly mindless. Unless in company, most everybody was watching, texting or scrolling while eating. I have caught myself doing the same, many many times. 🍏 When food is a way to distract or disconnect we usually don’t even taste it anymore. Or don’t notice that we are eating something because we are watching a show or answering texts. 🍏 During my recovery from disordered eating I learned to eat with more present. To look at food and what it represented in my life from a totally different and life-changing perspective. I worked on the inside instead of the constant outside focus. Eventually I healed and transformed my relationship I have with food but also with myself… 🍏 I now like setting myself challenges by leaving my phone in my bag while I eat. Self care is so important for our minds and souls. We are so conditioned to keep working keep hustling keep making money keep innovating keep up with our competition work 10-11 hour days and repeat. We burn out but we keep going because being tired is a status symbol of how much “work” we’re doing. ⠀ How wrong is that?!?!?!⠀ ⠀ Omg I LOVE my sleep and my down time and literally would go crazy without it. ⠀ I need my calming waves and soy or oat lattes. I need my puppy snuggles and Netflix. I need my stay in bed for a half hour after waking up and enjoy the morning doggy snuggles.
