A lot of people have been asking me on the DM how I got into acting and/or why I wanted to be an actor in the first place.
Most people don’t know this about me but my degree is not in acting. It’s in genetics. Genetics?! Yeah. 🤓 .
So when I booked this print job playing a scientific researcher, it fit like a glove. Believe it or not, that’s what I wanted to do as a career in college, cancer research. I worked in a laboratory that focused on altering genes in crops, ie cotton, sorghum, soybeans, tobacco, etc.
I did a research project with a plant called, Arabidopsis. I inserted a gene that would allow it to glow under UV light. Then I inserted a RNAi, silencer gene, that would silence the “glow in the dark gene”. This gene and silencer would be passed down to the plant’s seeds. Then the “kids” of that plant would not glow in the dark since the gene had been “silenced”. This is amazing because if researchers can figure out a way to use RNAi to silence the breast cancer gene, breast cancer could be eliminated altogether.
Although this was super fascinating and groundbreaking stuff, at one point during my four years of working at the lab, I realize that my favorite part of my job was watering the plants in the greenhouse. And that’s when I realized I should NOT be a researcher. 😂
