May 23: Kindness ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I believe we’re all born kind.
Greed, selfishness, violence, and war
are all put upon us
like ill-fitting suits of armor
crafted and fastened by the great, great grandchildren of those who wore the same suits so long,
they forgot what a relief it was
to be naked in their kindness.
I believe that, underneath the layers of heavy steel, blistering iron, and worn wool of
we are all kind. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I believe we each have the ability
to unclasp the armor,
to melt it into beams for bridges and needles for sewing and sculptures and scalpels and spaceships
and to let our children run about
in their inherent kindness.
I believe our kindness is most comfortable.
I believe that as fiercely as I can,
in the face of all evidence to the contrary
because if I ever stopped
I fear that I
just might reach for my armor,
