TRADE RUMOR 🚨: The Chiefs could explore trading contract-year WR Tyreek Hill this offseason according to ProFootballTalk.
This makes some sense. We already know the off the field incidents that he’s been involved in, and realistically it could only take one more slip up for him to be out of the league. His talent alone demands a high salary, but his antics off the field make him a more high-risk investment.
The Chiefs are also running a little low on cap space. They have been since the departure of former GM John Dorsey. According to Spotrac, the team has $24M in space left this year, but for the future they need to prioritize extending QB Patrick Mahomes and DE Chris Jones. It would be extremely difficult for them to fit three big-money extensions under he cap long term without really gutting the team. Is Tyreek Hill worth gutting the team for? I don’t think so.
It’s worth noting though that it sounds like the Chiefs will at least open preliminary extension talks with Hill if they haven’t already.
If the Chiefs do indeed explore his trade market, it would be very interesting to see what his value is. Last year he would’ve commanded a 1st Round pick, but I assume the off field stuff has lowered his stock a bit.
If I was the general manager, I’d seriously consider trading him. Get some valuable draft capital in return, save some cap space, and get rid of a headache.
It’s not up to me though, so we’ll have to wait and see. Stay tuned.
