This painting had an interesting evolution, and I want to share the sort of behind the scenes. This is long, but I have progress pics too, and thought this might be helpful to some of you. I posted pics from the @chesapeakefineartstudio with @haiouhou open house where I started this Saturday. I wasn’t crazy about it, but thought I had a pretty good start, at least on the fruit at the bottom. Sunday morning I hated it. I completely scraped away the top area—I mean right down to the bare canvas as best I could. I let it sit the rest of the weekend, to revisit Monday. As often happens, scraping had instantly improved the painting! It was rough, but I tackled it with the Hippocratic oath, first, do no harm! I took a very slow approach, considering each brushstroke, and determined to only add the bare minimum necessary to bring the painting back. I wanted to keep some of that scraped quality and looseness. It took remarkably little paint and few brushstrokes to bring it to where you see it now. I am not touching it now—fini! Loved the demos Saturday, but especially watching @lynnmehta paint the same scene I had chosen earlier. If you don’t know her work check it out, it’s lovely. Her paintings are beautifully loose, but she is very deliberate and intentional with each stroke.
1. This post is too long (need to get back to blogging)
2. Be brave—scrape and re-work
3. Watch good painters work whenever possible! Video, live, it all helps!
4. A limited palette REALLY works
