EIGHT sides remain in the province battle!
Feyenoord and AZ each won comfortably in the second round--the only remaining Rotterdam side won Zuid-Holland against Den Haag. AZ took down Telstar in the Noord-Holland final comfortably as well.
So, a huge matchup is on deck in this quarterfinal round--the two most successful clubs in league play, AZ and Feyenoord, will face off with one another. The winner will likely be the favorite to win the tournament...they'll face off with the winner of the Twente/PSV match.
On the other side of the bracket, PSV handled Willem in the Noord-Brabant final to set up a match against the Overijssel winner, Twente. Speaking of, the Overijssel final ended in a tight round of penalties. Zwolle pieced together a great performance, but couldn't get the job done against the Enschede side sitting in 4th in the current table.
On the other side of the bracket, Vitesse survived a talented Utrecht club in penalties. Venlo took down Friesland winner Almere City to meet the Arnhem side in the Quarterfinal.
Meanwhile, Emmen continues to perform well in cup ties--they dominated Fortuna to move through, and Cambuur defeated Groningen today. This sets up an Emmen/Cambuur quarterfinal that will send a winner through to a semi. What an opportunity for one of these underheralded clubs to continue its fight for a trophy! Can one of them pull off something similar to RKC's KNVB Beker run?
