Tinhorn Creek, one of the South Okanagan's best-known wineries, celebrated its 25th anniversary with a special dinner at La Terrazza in Yaletown yesterday night. The dinner was planned in a short period of time, but seeing it sold out is a testament to the organizers' skills and Tinhorn Creek's popularity.
We were treated to a wonderful evening of wine and food, with winemaker Andrew Windsor and viticulturalist Andrew Moon going through the history of Tinhorn Creek and their wines.
Tinhorn Creek 25th Anniversary Brut
2017 Oldfield Reserve 2Bench White
2014 Oldfield Reserve Syrah
2012 Oldfield Reserve Syrah
2014 The Creek
2014 Innovation Series Kerner Orange
The 2Bench White, a blend of 28% Sauvignon Blanc, 25% Chardonnay, 23% Viognier, 18% Semillon and 6% Muscat which delighted me with its harmony yet each varietal shines through with its trademark characteristics such as Sauvignon Blanc's gooseberry notes, Viognier's viscosity, and Muscat's floral qualities.
Out of the two Oldfield Reserve Syrahs, which have a touch of Viognier in the style of Côte-Rôtie, I preferred the 2014 with its riper bolder fruit and more prevalent oak influence that I thought went better with the roasted duck breast.
But my favourite wine of the evening was The Creek, which is not surprising as it is a Bordeaux blend. A Cabernet Sauvignon dominant blend with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot, it had notes of cacao, dark fruit, vanilla and baking spice. Tannin structure was present but not overbearing, and was a great match with beef tenderloin.
Many thanks to the teams at Tinhorn Creek, Trialto Wine Group, and La Terrazza for the marvelous wine dinner!
